MetaTrader 5: the fuller version of the same idea

MT5 keeps the MetaTrader workflow and adds analysis depth, faster testing and more instruments per account type.

What you gain over MT4

MT5 provides 21 timeframes, 38 built-in indicators, six pending order types, depth of market, an integrated economic calendar and a multi-threaded strategy tester that can use every core on the machine.

For discretionary traders the extra timeframes and calendar are the day-to-day benefit. For systematic traders, optimisation speed is the decisive advantage.

Setting up a workspace that scales

Group instruments into market watch sets by category, save chart templates per volatility class, and use the built-in calendar filter to hide low-impact events. Docking the toolbox panel to the right keeps positions visible while charts stay large.

Migrating from MT4 in practice

Chart templates and manual workflow transfer almost unchanged. Automated tools do not: MQL5 requires rewritten code, and some MT4-era indicators have no direct MT5 equivalent.

Run both platforms in parallel for a couple of weeks before committing, using the same account so results are directly comparable.

Strengths

  • More timeframes, indicators and order types
  • Multi-threaded strategy tester
  • Built-in economic calendar and depth of market

Limitations

  • MT4 expert advisors are incompatible
  • Slightly heavier on older hardware
  • Larger interface has a steeper first-week learning curve

Frequently asked questions

Generally yes, unless a specific MT4-only tool is required. Starting on MT5 avoids migrating later.
